About the IRLRC

Context and Justification

It is clear that a simple legal perspective is not sufficient to fully protect the rights of the child.   The experience and insight of other child-related disciplines need to be at the table.  It is also clear that members of the academic community must develop working relationships with the front-line child workers in order to blend theory, reality and research into better protection for children.  An interdisciplinary dialogue between all those interested in children’s rights would be a necessary next step.

As part of this interdisciplinary dialogue, the Faculty of Law and the HRREC of the University of Ottawa organized an International Conference on the Rights of the Child in March 2007. The conference brought together many specialists from different countries and from many professional backgrounds.  The creation of the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on the Rights of the Child is the logical outcome of the conference providing a practical vehicle to follow through with and facilitate the discussions, joint work and research opportunities discussed last March.
